Vermont farming began with Native Americans who grew corn, beans, and squash in forest clearings and tapped maple trees for syrup. European settlers cleared forests for farming and discovered that Vermont was perfect for dairy farming and growing apples. Vermont became famous for making the best maple syrup in America from sugar maple trees that grow throughout the state. The rocky soil and cool climate created special conditions for high-quality farming.
Vermont has rocky soil left by glaciers, rolling hills, and mountains that create perfect conditions for certain crops. The cool climate with cold winters and mild summers is ideal for maple trees and apple orchards. Vermont gets plenty of rain and snow, providing water for crops and maple syrup production. The Green Mountains divide the state and create different growing conditions on each side.
Vermont apples are ready to pick from September through November when orchards produce many heirloom varieties you can't find in stores. You can watch maple syrup being made in March when sap runs from the trees and gets boiled into syrup. Strawberries ripen in July when Vermont's cool summer weather makes them extra sweet. The state also grows good blueberries and other berries that thrive in the cool climate.
Fall is the most popular time to visit Vermont farms when apples are ripe and the leaves are changing to brilliant colors. Spring maple sugaring season is special but requires checking with farms about production schedules. Summer is great for berry picking with comfortable temperatures. Vermont farms often have beautiful mountain views and historic buildings that make visits memorable.
