Ohio farming began with Native Americans who grew corn, beans, and squash in the fertile river valleys. European settlers discovered that Ohio's rich soil and good climate were perfect for growing many different crops. The state became known for corn, soybeans, and excellent fruits and vegetables. Ohio's location made it easy to ship farm products to other states, and the state developed a strong tradition of family farming.
Ohio has rich, fertile soil throughout most of the state from ancient glaciers and prairie grasslands. The climate has warm summers and cold winters with enough rainfall for most crops. Western Ohio is flatter and better for corn and soybeans, while eastern Ohio has hills and valleys good for fruits and vegetables. Rivers provide water and ways to ship crops.
Ohio apples are ready to pick from August through October when orchards throughout the state produce many different varieties. You can pick strawberries in June when they ripen in Ohio's spring weather. Sweet corn is ready in July and August when it's tender and delicious. Ohio also grows great pumpkins, tomatoes, and berries that are perfect for picking.
Summer and fall are the best times to visit Ohio farms when apples, corn, and other crops are ready to pick. The weather is usually comfortable during these seasons. Fall is especially popular for apple picking and pumpkin patches when the leaves are changing colors. Many Ohio farms are family-owned operations that have been passed down through generations and offer tours and activities.
