Colorado farming began with Native American tribes who grew corn and beans in mountain valleys. Spanish explorers brought cattle and horses in the 1500s. Gold miners in the 1800s needed fresh food, so farmers started growing vegetables and fruits in the high mountain valleys. The Rocky Mountains and high altitude make Colorado fruits extra sweet and flavorful.
Colorado's high altitude and mountain climate create perfect conditions for growing sweet corn and fruit. The Western Slope near Grand Junction has warm days and cool nights that make the best peaches in America. The Arkansas River Valley grows amazing melons in sandy soil. Snow from the Rocky Mountains provides water for irrigation during the growing season.
Palisade peaches are ready to pick from July through September and are famous for being incredibly sweet and juicy. Sweet corn ripens in August and tastes amazing because of the high altitude growing conditions. You can pick apples in fall when the mountain air makes them extra crisp and flavorful. Colorado also grows great cherries, plums, and pears in the mountain valleys.
Summer and early fall are the best times to visit Colorado farms when peaches and other fruits are ripe. Mountain weather can change quickly, so bring warm clothes even in summer. The high altitude means the sun is very strong, so wear sunscreen and a hat. Many farms are located in beautiful mountain valleys with amazing views of the Rocky Mountains.
