Alabama's farming history began with Native American tribes who grew corn, beans, and squash in the fertile river valleys. European settlers brought cotton farming in the 1800s, making Alabama a major cotton producer for generations. After the Civil War, farmers started growing peanuts, which became so important that Alabama now produces over half of America's peanuts. The state also became famous for peaches, especially in Chilton County where families have grown sweet peaches for over 100 years.
Alabama has three main farming regions with different soils and weather. The Tennessee Valley in the north has rich, dark soil perfect for cotton and corn. The Black Belt across central Alabama gets its name from the dark, fertile soil that's great for growing crops. The Gulf Coastal Plain in the south has sandy soil and warm weather that's perfect for peanuts and peaches.
You can pick strawberries in Alabama from April through May when the weather is warm but not too hot. Peaches are ready to pick from June through August, with the sweetest ones coming from Chilton County. Blueberries ripen in July and August and are perfect for eating fresh or making pies. Pumpkins grow well in the fall and are ready to pick in October for Halloween.
The best time to visit Alabama farms is in spring and early summer when the weather is nice and many crops are ready. Bring sunscreen and a hat because it can get very hot and sunny. Most farms are open on weekends, but call ahead to make sure they have the fruit you want to pick. Many Alabama farms also have farm stands where you can buy other local foods like honey and jams.
