Tennessee farming began with Native Americans who grew corn, beans, and squash in the river valleys throughout the state. European settlers brought tobacco farming and discovered that Tennessee's climate and soil were good for many different crops. The state became known for growing excellent tomatoes, especially in the eastern counties. Tennessee farmers also developed important livestock farming, especially cattle and hogs.
Tennessee has three main regions with different elevations and climates. East Tennessee has mountains and valleys with cooler weather good for apples and other cool-season crops. Middle Tennessee has rolling hills and fertile soil good for tobacco and vegetables. West Tennessee is flatter with rich soil from the Mississippi River that's good for cotton and soybeans.
Tennessee tomatoes are famous for their flavor and ready to pick from June through September when they're ripe and juicy. You can pick strawberries in May and June when Tennessee's spring weather is perfect for berry growing. Apples ripen in the eastern mountains from September through November. The state also grows good peaches, blackberries, and sweet corn that visitors can harvest.
Summer and early fall are the best times to visit Tennessee farms when tomatoes, apples, and other crops are ripe. The weather can be hot and humid in summer, so morning visits are more pleasant. Mountain areas are cooler and offer beautiful scenery along with apple picking. Many Tennessee farms have interesting histories and stories about traditional farming methods.
