Maine farming started with Native Americans who grew corn, beans, and squash and gathered wild blueberries. European settlers brought apple trees and discovered that Maine's climate was perfect for growing apples and potatoes. Maine became famous for its wild blueberries, which grow naturally in fields called blueberry barrens. Farmers also learned to make maple syrup from sugar maple trees that grow throughout the state.
Maine has rocky soil and cool temperatures that are perfect for growing blueberries, apples, and potatoes. The coast stays cooler in summer and warmer in winter because of the ocean. Inland areas have more forests and mountains with maple trees for syrup. Maine gets plenty of rain and has a short but intense growing season during the warm summer months.
Maine's wild blueberries are ready to pick in July and August when they're small, sweet, and packed with flavor. You can pick apples from September through October when Maine orchards produce many old-fashioned varieties. Potatoes are harvested in fall, and some farms let visitors help dig them up. Maine also produces maple syrup that you can watch being made in early spring.
Summer and early fall are the best times to visit Maine farms when blueberries and apples are ripe. The weather is usually perfect in August and September with comfortable temperatures and low humidity. Bring layers because Maine weather can change quickly, especially near the coast. Many farms offer beautiful views of forests, mountains, or the ocean along with fresh produce.
