Georgia farming began with Native Americans who grew corn, beans, and squash in the river valleys. European settlers brought peach trees from China in the 1700s, and Georgia became known as the Peach State. Cotton farming was very important in the 1800s, but farmers later started growing peanuts, pecans, and other crops. Georgia's warm climate and good soil made it perfect for many different crops.
Northern Georgia has mountains and cooler weather that's perfect for apples and mountain crops. Central Georgia has rolling hills and red clay soil that's great for peaches and cotton. Southern Georgia is flat with sandy soil that's perfect for peanuts and pecans. The state gets plenty of rain and has a long growing season from March through November.
Georgia peaches are world-famous and ready to pick from May through August when they're sweet and juicy. You can pick blueberries from June through August when they're perfect for eating fresh or making muffins. Pecans fall from trees in October and November and are fun to gather for holiday baking. Georgia also grows great apples in the northern mountains that ripen in fall.
Spring through fall are great times to visit Georgia farms, with different crops ready at different times. Summer can be hot and humid, so early morning or late afternoon visits are more comfortable. Many peach farms offer tours and tastings during peach season from May to August. Georgia farms often have farm stands selling local honey, jams, and other homemade products.
